Consumable care aids - what exactly does that mean?

Consumable care aids - what exactly does that mean?

Consumable care aids are products that are regularly used in the care of people, especially in home care, and are disposed of after use.

Consumable care aids are intended to prevent infections and improve hygiene in home care.

These aids are designed to support those in need of care and to make caregiving easier for family members or professional caregivers. They are intended for one-time use or a limited period and must be replaced regularly.

Examples of consumable care aids include:

  • Disposable gloves
  • Bed pads or protective underlays
  • Disinfectant
  • face mask
  • Protective aprons
  • Finger cots

In Germany, consumable care supplies are usually reimbursed by the long-term care insurance funds if the person in need of care has a corresponding care level.

The long-term care insurance fund covers up to €40 per month.

Take advantage of your monthly entitlement to care supplies!

What many don't know: The subsidy for care aids of up to 40 euros per month is given to those in need of care in addition to other care benefits and is not deducted from the care allowance or the care benefit in kind, for example.

Why do I need a consultation?

From July 1, 2024, new regulations will apply for applying for consumable care supplies .

From this day forward, all providers must offer you a consultation on care aids and conduct this consultation. Only then may the application with the recommended products be forwarded to your long-term care insurance provider.

In a care consultation, you, as a person in need of care or a family caregiver, receive information about support options , such as respite care, assistance services, and nursing care benefits. A certified care advisor will assess your situation , present relevant services, and create an individualized care plan for you.

Legal claim

Care consultation according to § 7a SGB XI

Care courses and training according to § 45 SGB XI

Advisory visits from care level 2 according to § 37.3 SGB XI
