💜 Lavender against mosquitoes – naturally effective 🧪 Why does lavender work?

Lavender contains essential oils , especially linalool and linalyl acetate – these substances have a strong, pleasant scent for humans, but mosquitoes dislike it.

The essential oils mask the scent trail that normally leads mosquitoes to us (sweat, COâ‚‚, etc.). This confuses or repels them.

🦟 Risks of mosquito bites 1. Harmless reactions (common)

  • Itching and redness: The typical reaction to the mosquito saliva protein.

  • Swelling: Sometimes severe, especially in sensitive skin.

  • Sensation of warmth: Local inflammation due to the immune response.

2. Stronger reactions (in sensitive individuals)

  • Large welts: Especially common in children or people with sensitive skin.

  • Allergic reactions: Rare, but possible – ranging from severe swelling at the injection sites to shortness of breath (very rare).

  • Secondary infection: Scratching can cause the skin to become inflamed and infected with bacteria (e.g., staphylococci).

3. Disease transmission (depending on region and mosquito species)

In Germany the risk is low, but in tropical or subtropical regions a single sting can mean more:

  • Malaria – v. a. in Africa (Plasmodium parasite)

  • Dengue fever – in Asia, South America, Africa

  • Zika virus – v. a. South America

  • Chikungunya – also tropical

  • West Nile virus – also in Southern/Eastern Europe and sporadically in Germany

4. Rare complications

  • Skeeter syndrome: A severe local allergic reaction to mosquito bites – with extreme swelling, pain, sometimes fever.

  • Risk of blood clots from excessive scratching: Very rare, but possible in case of infection + poor wound care.
